What is the Family Nutrition Program?

hio State University Extension's Family Nutrition Program (FNP) is funded by Midwest Region Food and Nutrition Service, United States Dept. of Agriculture.  TheFNP is a joint partnership between the Ohio Dept. of Human Services and Ohio State University in an effort to improve the level of nutrition education of families and individuals with an emphasis on serving the rural poor.  FNP  began in Ohio in fall of 1991 (FY-93) in 12 rural counties.  In expanded in FY04 to include 23 rural counties, in FY95 to include 43 rural counties, and currently in FY99 there were 73 counties.
 

The Ohiohio State University Extension Family Nutrition Program targets low-income audiences and food stamp recipients in Scioto County by providing nutritional education in:


        *  Food Dollar Budgeting          *  Improving Eating Habits
        *  Improving Eating Habits        *  Food Safety


This program has been in Scioto County since January, 1993.

Tammy Hamilton, Extension Program Assistant, Family & Nutrition Program, provides educational information through programs, demonstrations, fact sheets, bulletin boards, hand-on activities, food samples, project display boards, and one-on-one consultation.

This program offers nutritional information to allow individuals to use the Food Guide Pyramid to make daily food choices as set by the United States Department of Agriculture.

Menu planning guidance in balanced menu planning and recipes for low-cost nutritious meals.

Food safety guides to appropriate preparation and storage of foods.

Cooking instruction to provide basic food preparation skills needed. 

Budgeting  information provided for better management of food dollars.

Demonstrations and classes incorporated the use of:

How Can I Participate in the Family Nutrition Program?

You may contact your local Extension office for a listing of programs and classes being offered in your county. All programs are offered to clientele on a nondiscriminatory basis.
